The Secret Your Broker Doesn't Want You to Know 🕵️

When you click Buy, someone's on the other side of that trade. Most traders never think to ask who.
Sometimes it's a total stranger, matched to you automatically through a system called ECN. The broker just takes a small commission and steps out of the way completely. But sometimes it's your own broker, and that changes the whole picture. Under what's called the Market Maker model, when you profit, they actually lose money on that trade. When you lose, they gain.
Plenty of brokers handle this responsibly, hedging their exposure so it stays fair either way. But some quietly hold onto losing trades instead of passing them along, a practice called B-Booking, and there's no announcement when it happens.
One way to check: look for a separate commission line on your trades. If it's there, you're probably trading against the real market. If it's missing and the spread feels a bit wide, there's a decent chance you're trading against your own broker.
